BNDES signs agreement to raise US$ 150 million through Japanese banks

Apr 1, 2015

• Loan was signed with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Mizuho Bank, Ltd. Each institution contributed half the resources

The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has just entered into a financing agreement in the amount of US$ 150 million with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Mizuho Bank, Ltd. The instrument was signed on March 27, and each institution contributed half the resources.

The operation is within the scope of the Global Action for Reconciling Economic Growth and Environmental Preservation (GREEN Line), whose purpose is to provide support to projects focusing on preserving the global environment, promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and energy generation from renewable sources.

This is the third fundraising agreement the BNDES has signed with the JBIC within the scope of the GREEN Line. The two previous agreements were signed in 2011 and 2014 and also had financial collaboration from the Mizuho Bank, Ltd.

The BNDES has been operating in partnership with multilateral and governmental agencies with the purpose of diversifying and expanding its funding since the 1950s. The relationship between the BNDES and the JBIC started in 1962, when the first loan agreement was signed with the Export-Import Bank of Japan (JEXIM), which was JBIC’s predecessor.

Since then, another 16 agreements have been signed, including this new cooperation in the GREEN Line. For more than 50 years, JBIC and the BNDES have continuously strived to develop activities to strengthen their institutional relationship.

The JBIC was created in 1999 as a financial institution wholly controlled by the Japanese government. The institution plays an important role in implementing the Japanese government’s economic cooperation policy by supporting the steady and sustainable development of foreign nations. This helps strengthen economic relations between Japan and the international community.

With this new loan agreement, the BNDES will continue its strategy of expanding its relationship with international financial institutions, increasing the scale of investments made in partnership with multilateral and governmental agencies.
