BNDES supports innovative treatment for critical Covid-19 patients

Oct 5, 2020

The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) approved a R$ 10 million loan to expand the supply of equipment and disposable items used in an innovative therapy for the treatment of severe Covid-19 cases. Produced by Braile Biomédica Indústria Comércio e Representações Ltda., these pieces of equipment act as an “auxiliary lung” that promotes the carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange.  This operation takes place under BNDES Emergency Support Program to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

Braile Biomédica produces innovative equipment to combat Covid-19 in São José do Rio Preto (SP). In the treatment of more severe cases of the disease, a procedure called Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) is used. The electromedical equipment of cardiopulmonary circulation acts as an artificial “auxiliary lung” that promotes both the exchange of gases in blood and its heating. At the same time, the equipment monitors blood flow and pressure, among other clinical parameters, thus ensuring the safety of the procedure. The device had its registration approved by Anvisa on September 17.

“The pandemic has been resilient, the number of cases and deaths are still at very high levels in the country. This is where the strength of BNDES’s support lies, in new products and solutions that ease the effects of the disease on patients,” said João Paulo Pieroni, head of the BNDES’s Industrial Complex and Health Services Department.

In the pandemic, Braile’s treatment is of great relevance for hospitals and medical centers, which will have one more front to treat patients who do not react to conventional ventilation and oxygenation therapies. It is expected that, by December, 20 ECMO equipment will be produced, in addition to 620 disposables that are also used in the procedure. The company will also sell other products from its portfolio used to combat Covid-19, such as oxygenators and external pacemakers.

BNDES Emergency Support Program to Combat the Coronavirus Pandemic – Launched late March as one of BNDES’s actions to combat the effects of the new coronavirus pandemic, the program has already approved R$ 293 million in 12 operations, resulting in the availability of more than 2,900 beds for the care of patients infected with Covid-19, 4 million rapid diagnostic kits for the disease and 1,700 new pieces of medical equipment such as ventilators and monitors.

About BNDES – Founded in 1952 and currently linked to the Ministry of Economy, BNDES is the main instrument of the Federal Government to promote long-term investments in the Brazilian economy.
